"Drawn By..." is an exhibition of diverse drawings that range from Mike Kelley's notebook drawings and Tony Oursler's early studies to Jorge Pardo's abstract pools of colored inks on vellum that allude to currents on nautical maps. Also included are Martin Kippenberger's 1995 erotic drawings done in Japan on hotel stationary. Jim Shaw will exhibit a selection of his vividly detailed drawings documenting his recent dreams, and Carroll Dunham, who also places great emphasis on drawing, includes a selection of pieces that expose the evolution of his special language of content and imagery. Francis Alÿs, a Belgian artist who resides in Mexico City, is represented by small scale drawings on vellum torn from their original sheets, then reorganized and taped in loose sequence. Alÿs' understated images and Gary Simmons' smudged charcoal and erased chalk drawings are in sharp contrast to Matthew Ritchie's finely detailed drawings which densely articulates his highly inventive mythology of the foundation of the universe.
